Night was when the subconscious wandered. Sometimes it wandered into the path of a passing demon...
Britt Grayling is a 24 year old graduate student whose life, while not the stuff of legend, is comfortable and predictable. This peace comes to an end one night when she unwittingly attracts the attention of a hungry incubus. Far from being terrified, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to this mysterious creature.
Damian has been visiting sin and corruption on the unsuspecting for time immemorial, yet nothing has prepared him for his response to this woman. While Damian’s attentions awaken in Britt both dread and arousal – the two main ingredients in a demon’s sustenance – he finds himself uncharacteristically unable to feed from her. In all of his centuries, Damian has never found himself in this position.
Something is very wrong.
It soon becomes clear that their chance meeting has consequences that neither Britt nor Damian could have anticipated. As their lives quickly unravel, they come to realize that the cost of deliverance may be more than either of them are willing to pay.

TRIGGER WARNING: There is a scene in Chapter 53 where Damian is completely out of his mind and loses control, and is very rough and brutal with his partners, unaware that he is causing his partners incredible pain and anguish. Although the partners were consenting and did not try to stop him, it still made me very uncomfortable. And it is a long scene, he ravishes them over and over again without pause - "By the end, both she and *** were numb, beyond any reasonable capacity to react." (quote from the book) It left a bad taste in my mouth.Apart from this, there are some unnecessary scenes which make the story longer than it needs to be and don't contribute to the plot (for example, when Kat, Damian's friend and a succubus, goes in search of a "feed", it takes SIX chapters!). I found myself getting impatient and wanting the author to get to the point instead of beating around the bush.
However, the writing itself is skilfully done; the author knows how to paint a scene and draw the reader in. Even better, McColl is able to juxtapose scenes to build anticipation. In some places one chapter is a scene with Damian and another is a scene with Britt in a totally different place, and then back to Damain again in the following chapter, yet it never feels disjointed and I didn't feel like I had been jolted in and out of place. The writing flowed seamlessly. This was very impressive and speaks volumes of the author's technical skills.
Having said that, I did not like the ending and there were several things about the story that were unclear, one of which was the "binding" issue. I will explain this further below under "spoilers", for those who want to know more. If you don't like spoilers, please don't read any further.
SPOILERS:
1. The ending: I did not like that Damian could not "feed" from Britt, so even though he's in love with her (and she with him), he still needs to go out at night and hunt for other random women to have sex with in order to survive. That is ewww and not romantic at all.
2. Binding: This is an integral concept to the story but we are never told exactly what it entails. All we know is that it marks a person (or demon) as belonging to a particular demon, thus protecting them from "others of his type", creates a connection between them that cannot be broken, and is "for life and beyond". What kind of connection? Does that mean they can read each other's minds? Sense each other's emotions? What? Kat is bound to Damian, but she is an incubus, why would she need to be protected from "others of his type" (succubi)? Why does the binding "awaken" something in Britt? So many unanswered questions!
3. Demon sex: Kat says demons can never be together, but after Britt becomes "more demon", Damian and Britt don't have any problems sexing each other up. Why is that? And his, um... "seed" actually becomes LESS toxic to her than it was before she became "more demon"!
I would read other works by McColl -- the writing was good, as I've noted -- but I don't think I'll continue with this particular series.

Incubus Demonsong Book 1 edition by KT McColl Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
At the first glance the book is about lust and guilty pleasures, but under the erotic layer there is a haunted world that wants to be taken into consideration. It is so embedded into our lives that, at times, you don’t know where the human part ends and the evil one starts; you don’t know what to like and what to avoid, as the author explores the fine distinction between good and evil, both having their place in any of us.
The first encounter with the ‘evil’ succubus was interesting, but went too fast and too far, narrowing the reader’s expectation. At the other side, the book should have ended when Britt took the decision to leave the incubus/succubus’ nest.
In the end, my understanding of this book can be summed up with two quotes, both coming from Damian, the incubus
“Our teeny capacity to lead folks astray is nothing compared to what humanity is capable of doing all by itself without any help from us.”
And “Sometimes it was a wonder that his (evil) master needed the likes of Damian at all.”
Well, if a demon designed to spread the evil think of him being useless in our world…
I received the book from the author.
This was a truly interesting read. It wasn't what I expected, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. When I think of paranormal erotica, I don't normally think of something cerebral, but this story was just that. It was a surprisingly heady tale, a philosophical novel with main characters that just so happened to be an incubus and a succubus (and a human).
Reading this book, it became clear to me off the bat that K.T. McColl is a polished writer who writes with a sophisticated style. I later learned that she spent many years as a technical writer. In this story, she humanized her demons, making them more like people than monsters. I found the pacing to be slow at times, and personally I was wanting more action due to it being paranormal. But it's still a solidly written novel, and others may not find the pacing a problem. I recommend this one for people who like erotica that's a little different, that gives them something to ponder.
McColl does it again... I never thought I'd find myself empathizing with demons, let alone rooting for them. Only the best author can lure you in this deftly. McColl's style of storytelling is simply irresistible, eloquent and never heavy-handed or predictable. I always wind up pulling every character close to my heart... yes, even the demons.
Nothing like a good incubus/succubus erotica read. Especially when the author knows how to write and weave a mysterious tale. Add to that good graphic sex, which is why we read erotica, and the impossible a demon falling in love. Looking forward to Book 2 of Demonsong.
The boyfriend Mike was badly handled in this story. The author was forced to put evil thoughts in his mind to justify Britt leaving him only for sex. Also the binding was too simple compared to that in the next story. They should have been the same. Compared to the next story this one is not as good. I didn't like Britt and I saw no reason for the attraction. Britt is very shallow and self consumed and not someone to identify with. Damien is better and deserves someone better than the selfish Britt. I'd totally rewrite this one.
While I confess a fondness for demons, Ms. McColl kicked my predilection up a notch with this beautifully-written and imaginative book.
So much more than a paranormal romp, 'Incubus' cleverly illustrates the eternal push and pull of predestined lovers fighting their attraction to one another, the lengths and depths to which we go for escape or acquiescence.
Well-drawn characters, a compelling plot and delicious sex scenes organic to the story make this series opener a must-read. Looking forward to Book 2.
