FROM AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR MIKE KILROY AND PERFECT FOR FANS OF THE HUNGER GAMES AND THE MAZE RUNNER COMES ...
... THE 17
Zack Earnest will die today.
That's okay. He'll be back from the dead tomorrow.
You Only Live Once? Not here. Here the rules of life and death don't apply.
"HIGHLY ORIGINAL AND EXTREMELY ENGAGING" -- New York Book Pundit
Whisked away from his home, his only friend and his mother's scrumptious eggs, 17-year-old outcast Zack finds himself a stranger in a strange land, surrounded by other teens from his world and many others, held hostage and thrust into barbaric games by an ancient species known only as the Ankhs.
The Ankhs are in their death throes and seek a "Spark" to survive. Zack and sixteen others just like him may possess it.
"FULL OF INGENIOUS PLOT TWISTS AND UNEXPECTED EVENTS" -- Readers & Writers Journal
Along the way Zack develops a romance with the girl (in the solar system) next door, and they soon discover the Ankhs are not what they seem.
"THE ENDING IS SO. INCREDIBLY. AWESOME" -- reviewer
From the best-selling author of the award-winning Nine Meals comes an epic action-adventure, coming-of-age story of hope and redemption, patience and understanding, acceptance and belonging and that, even in the center of the universe, love is a constant.
The 17 edition by Mike Kilroy Children eBooks
I really, really enjoyed Kilroy's "Nine Meals" and, like going to see any Spielberg film regardless of genre, I couldn't wait to read "The 17".I'm glad I did. This is a young adult sci-fi, coming of age novel and the protagonist, Zack Earnest, shines in the role. The world the story takes place in is richly-layered and all five senses are actively engaged. The same can be said for the characters, which you quickly come to know and grow vested in-without a babble of back story, I might add.
The book is unique on several levels, but there's one thing I really want to mention that is unrelated to the storytelling itself. While many writers would have broken this up into three parts and sold them separately (nothing wrong with the practice), the author has bundled what could have easily been a trilogy into one neat little package. Yep, no crappy cliffhanger, even better, the ending is so. incredibly. awesome. It's solid and yet leaves you begging for more pages. That's how you know you've read a great book; when all is neatly tied up and you still want to tag along.
Five stars all the way.
P.S. Consider this my signature on a petition for a follow-up novella. I'd love to stalk Zack, Harness, Brock, heck...ALL the rest of the crew for a day, or two.

The 17 edition by Mike Kilroy Children eBooks Reviews
I was captivated from the very first page and couldn’t stop reading. Like the character Jenai, I am constantly searching for books that transport me to another world, and Kilroy has mastered the art.
When I opened up The 17 I was thrilled to be sucked right into the intense new world that Zack, a lonely boy from Maine has been transported into. The reader feels like part of the 17 as Zack struggles to adapt and understand the new world he has been thrust into and to master the group dynamics, including standing up against the group leader Harness.
If you like playing video games this book is for you! Kilroy has created a world with a brand new set of rules. Rules that the characters are struggling to learn as they face one challenge after another.
Kilroy writes in an engaging, easy to read manner, that isn’t just for teens. His writing style makes his characters come alive! When you reach the last page, you will wish there was more (in a good way)!
This was my first Mike Kilroy novel, but will not be my last. I just finished reading "The 17" in 2 days, and immediately went back to and purchased “Solo”. I’ll be skipping “Nine Meals” since I’m not big on the Dystopian genre. It’s everywhere! What’s up with that (can you tell it's one of my pet peeves)?
Even though “The 17” was billed as sci-fi for young adults, the description and reviews grabbed me enough to try it out when I saw it on a discount website. I’m always on the lookout for new sci-fi authors and am really glad that I gave this one a chance. There’s not much new that I can say about it without writing spoilers, except that every time I picked it up - thinking I was just going to take a 10-minute break from housework with a cup of coffee - it would be a couple hours or more before I could tear myself away from it. As I write this, my dirty dishes are still piled on the counter and the mail remains unopened. Thanks Mike. But seriously, this book really did take me away from the hum-drum and that doesn't happen very often. When it does happen, I like to write a review while it's still fresh in my brain..
“The 17” was chock full of a variety of interesting walking/talking alien species from multiple other planet, and different alien terrains, where I could almost envision myself standing there beside the characters. I was happy that all of these different species could understand each other through some time of “universal translator” (although not a physical device); but that made me chuckle, since the only beings that the earth-born characters could not understand were other humans who spoke a different earth language. Also, even though there were many characters with different relationships to each other, they were added in such a way that I had no trouble keeping track of them. I consider myself an intelligent human being, but when I read for escapism (which is most of the time, if I'm honest about it), I don't want to have to go back and re-read or puzzle out what's going on, and I didn't have to do that with this book.
I must add that even though I appreciated reading a book that had an actual beginning, a middle, and a clearly wrapped-up ending, personally, I wasn’t a fan of how the end shook out … ‘nuff said about that without spoilers.
