Yes, so I know 33-year-olds are not necessarily the target market for Olivia, but I am such a huge fan of Olivia's spirited and quirky ways that I pre-ordered this latest book. I expected to roll my eyes a bit at all the princess-y business, but Falconer took a different approach with it, which is - "why does everyone want to be the same?". Olivia is having an identity crisis, because she used to love princesses and pink until everyone else started loving that too. Then, she realized she wanted to be unique, and explores what that means to her.

This is not a book to give someone who is princess-mad at the moment. But for someone who is feeling like they stand out, don't know where they fit in, or needs the courage to be themselves, it's a perfect read. Funny, sharply witty and sparklingly Olivia, it's a wonderfully fun book that I've read five or six times now.

Don't think that just because it's a kid's book that kids of other ages or grownups wouldn't like it. If you know someone who needs cheering up and encouragement to go ahead and be different, this would make a great gift - a lot better than a card.

My favorite part is when Olivia was experimenting with a more stark, modern style. I love how Falconer incorporates interesting cultural references into his book, most of which I'm not familiar with until he shares them. Love it.
This book introduced us to Olivia. I love that pig, and my granddaughters love the stories about her. She's a pig with attitude, not the standard character in a children's book. But Olivia lives and learns, and the girls learn with her. There might even be a few lessons for the grandmas, too!

This is by far my favorite Olivia book. My daughter loves it, too. There are so many books out there encouraging girls to be princesses and frilly, which is great for the girls who like that. But for those of us with girls who love firetrucks as much as baby dolls, they don't really appeal to us. This is superbly written!! It is all about her trying to find a way to not be like every other girl and be a princess. Her options will make the adult reader laugh more than the kid considering they won't get it, and her ultimate choice is quite clever. I love books that don't talk down to kids, but give them a chance to increase their vocabulary because Olivia speaks very much like an adult. It's witty, creative, encourages independence, and flat out funny. Both my twins, boy/girl, love this book!
Olivia wonders why all the girls, and some boys, want to be princesses and all look the same. Why can't they be Thai princesses, or a princess from China? Olivia figures out what she really wants to be - QUEEN! Cute book. My girls are big fans of Olivia.
I bought it for the illustrations. I am not so fond of the story. The wording is really slanted more to an adult. Not a good rhyming flow that children love. I make up my own words which works fine for a 2 year old.
This book is about Olivia, a piglet who wants to stand out among her friends, and how she goes about doing so. While her mother tries to get her to go to sleep, she comes up with all sorts of ideas of ways to be unique in her princesshood why not be an African princess, or a Thai princess, or a Chinese princess? Finally Olivia decides that rather than being a princess, she wants to be a queen, and that ends the book.

I felt that this book was too short, and the language is pretty sophisticated for its target audience. My goddaughter couldn't sit still while I was reading it, which I took as a sign of boredom with the story. My goddaugher's little friend, who was also listening in, left before I'd even finished the book. What's here is fine, but I thought the story should have further explored ways of being a princess or taking on other roles entirely, as Olivia explored her options. Because of these issues I can only give this work three stars. What's here isn't bad, but there should have been more.
