Catch Me a Colobus Gerald Durrell 9780006344629 Books
Had been trying to find a copy of this for years, and now I finally have it. The colobus monkeys sound fascinating, as was his trip to capture them for his zoo, to build up a breeding colony of them. Has black and white photos. Classic Durrell, lots of fun. Would recommend to anyone who finds life boring--this is a whole different slice of life.Tags : Buy Catch Me a Colobus on Amazon.com ✓ FREE SHIPPING on qualified orders,Gerald Durrell,Catch Me a Colobus,HarperCollins,0006344623
Catch Me a Colobus Gerald Durrell 9780006344629 Books Reviews
First off, people who read this must be warned. It was written by a very irreverent man, at a time when people were not always respectful to people of different cultures or to nature or have a humane approach to procuring animals for a zoo.
In his attempt to "populate" his zoo, Mr. Durrell had some adventures so hilarious you will giggle like a school boy/girl. Handsome zoo employees causing heartbreak, balloon hating chimpanzees, pretty heiresses asking for donations, exotic animals that bring joy and great sorrow, that is the good part. That is the part that will make you grin openly and chuckle loudly. Mr. Durrell has none of the stereotypical British restraint when it comes to humor. He is generous, toothsome and absolutely over the top at times.
But there are parts that might seem offensive, especially his observations about a certain overweight woman, and his experiences on pretty much the entire continents of Africa and South America. If you are willing to accept the limitations of the era, you will find this a outrageously funny read. If you are not, you will not.
All books by Gerald Durrell are great and this is one of them. Wise, funny, informative, and kind, his books always make my life brighter.
A journey to west africa to collect endangered species for his zoo in Jersey where he preserved animals against extinction. Durrell funded his zoo greatly with his writing. This is one of his books describing the trials and tribulations of finding and catching animals in the wild. A good read for what it is.
So, what do you think when you hear about a Duchess who collects money for charity? That she is old, tweedy, smells of spaniels. That is what Gerald thought until he met the melting eyed beauty to whom he eagerly gives all his money, and discovers that she was the tweedy duchess.Hmm.. The encounters in the zoo are hilarious, apes get loose, tigers get pregnant and women fall by the droves for a handsome zoo employee. It is endearing, funny and occasionally outrageous and Gerald's language is so evocative, you imagine the scene, however implausible and cannot stop laughing for it.
A great read, some really funny moments from a great writer. Times have changed in the nearly 50 years since the events in the book, long sea voyages to exotic ports, hardship and tribulations on long treks into the interior in search of rare animals. Durrell gives us great stories not only of his collecting voyages but of the daily headaches and triumphs running a large zoo. Collecting animals from the wild for zoos has become less acceptable over the years. Durrell was a genuine conservationist and his care for the animals and their fate comes through in the many great anecdotes.
Funny takes me back to a lost era.
